The Faculty of Civil Engineering (CE) was originally founded in 1997 as the Department of Hydraulic Engineering in the Southern Campus of the Vietnamese Maritime University, a well-known leading University in Ho Chi Minh City which was established in 1988. Over almost a decade and three years as a teaching college, from 2001 onwards the University restructured and renamed as the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport in order to expand and strengthen the capacity of their training and research activities. The University, while transforming itself into a modern research institute, expanded and developed a number of professional faculties. Consequently, a second transformation of sorts took place at the Hydraulic Engineering Department in 2010, resulting in the Faculty of Civil Engineering of today.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering comprises four Departments. Since establishment, there have been more than 60 Lecturers in the Faculty and nearly 50% of which graduated from reputation Institutes in the world.

     Department of Construction Engineering: 11

     Department of Engineering Fundamentals: 15

     Department of Geotechnical Engineering: 7

Department of Mechanics of Structures: 25

     Department of Structural Engineering: 10

Currently, there is approximately 1000 undergraduate students study in the Faculty and this number is rising every year. At the very outset of its teaching, the Faculty decided that a “learning-by-doing” approach should be the policy of the Faculty in order to provide hands-on experience for their students. The Faculty has an excellent record and engagement with almost leading companies in Ho Chi Minh City such as BlueScope Steel Vietnam, Bachy Soletanche Vietnam, Hoa Binh Construction & Real Estate Corporation, COFICO, NAGECCO, Chan Phuong Engineering (CPE), Holcim Vietnam, Wacker Chemicals (South Asia) Pte. Ltd. Vietnam, TEDI SOUTH, HSD Vietnam Co., Ltd, IBM Vietnam, INTOC, etc.

In parallel with teaching, research plays a key role in activities of the Faculty. The Faculty has exchange programmes and collaboration with lots of Universities in the world: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of California at Davis, University of Arkansas (USA); University of Liverpool, University of the West of England, Guildford College (UK); University of Sherbrooke (Canada); University College Dublin (Ireland); University of New South Wales (Australia); German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), the Centre for Higher Education (CHE), University of Weimar, University of Kassel, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) /University of Karlsruhe (TH), University of Applied Sciences Osnabrueck, Hamm-Lippstadt University (Germany); University of Liège (Belgium); Norwegian Geotechinical Institute – NGI (Norway), Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal); Nagaoka University of Technology (Japan); University of Hohai (China); NUS (Singapore); etc.
